Frequently Asked Questions

As human beings, it is in our inherent nature to BE creative. With the meals we cook, the way we put on makeup, or how we build routine in our lives, we all have the ability to CREATE. You don't need to be experienced with any art form to be in session with me. Rather than focussing on skill, we will pay attention to what materials or art form YOU are drawn to in the present moment. From there we will dive into a process that is solely led by your imagination, sparked curiosity, and intuitive senses. Once there is surrender to have trust in the process, the art will speak for itself, and your CREATIVE ALCHEMY will be unlocked and open to the empowering force of POTENTIAL.

I am a practitioner who strongly believes in the power of SELF EXPRESSION as the driving force behind personal growth, transformation and healing. Rather than focussing on enhancing your artistic skills or looking at how you could DO better, we will foster a nurturing space where you are comfortable to BE who you are in your most present and honest form. We will practice how to deeply listen, notice and attentively respond to the sensations that arise within you and around you. In expressive arts therapy, it can be mentally distracting and even debilitating when the fixation is on a specific goal or desirable product. I like to create a culture where your presence and imagination dictates how you tend to your fire of curiosity. This approach will expand your range of PLAY while encouraging you to go deeper in your self exploration.

Humans of ANY generation, shape, size, colour, spirit, orientation, gender expression, and ethnic background are welcome and have a seat at my table of expressive arts therapy. It is my continual pursuit to uphold an inclusive environment where you feel safe to show up just as your remarkably UNIQUE SELF. The creative approach to therapy extends a helping hand to those who may struggle to find the words or who may not know how to express their interpretation of their lived experience or difficult past. The beauty of this method is that whether you are a child, teenager, adult, or elder, the expressive arts will amplify the voice of your subconscious and address what is needing delicate attention and care.

Absolutely! I choose to offer online counselling to expand my community and build a bridge of accessibility beyond borders. There are unexpected benefits when arts-based therapy is facilitated in your own home. With the materials on hand you are able to practice healthy coping strategies and continue your self expression on your own time. Another benefit is that remnants of a profound therapeutic experience may linger in your space in a way that helps remind you of the personal growth and transformation that took place. I like to see online sessions as an opportunity to build integrity that EMPOWERS you to keep returning to the healing practices you've explored.

How to best prepare for your online session is by setting up your makeshift “in-house” studio space with intention. First, I like to offer an opportunity to nurture your prep-time by collecting items of significance to surround you and honour your healing journey such as crystals, plants, and images of loved ones. I will also ask questions to gather relevant details about the space, materials, and art forms that have your interest to get a sense of you and the environment you’re in:

What kind of art supplies are accessible to you at this time?

Although it can be great to have quintessential arts materials on hand, I acknowledge this is a privilege and not accessible to everyone. Expressive arts therapy is NOT dependent on having such distinct art supplies available. We can work with photographs, fruit from the fruit bowl, scraps of fabrics, pieces of nature, or even old receipts. Our options are endless! I ask that you have your materials of interest nearby so that they are easy to grab when we are ready to dive into creativity.

What kind of space is available to you during our sessions together?

It is important to have a private space during therapeutic appointments in order to remain focussed and present. I ask about your space to inquire of any furniture that may need to be carefully moved temporarily in order to optimize room capacity. This allows us to stay in the flow of a session where an impulse to explore movement or dance can come up and be welcomed with ease.

What art forms do you like and are naturally drawn to?

Based on what is accessible, I like to start working with art modalities that are familiar and of natural interest to you. My approach is all about uncovering your intrinsic callings and refining your sense of self. Following your desires and curiosities in the arts is a great place to start this beautiful process. Over time I will prompt creative invitations outside of your comfort zone to initiate new grounds of discovery, confidence and awe.

The difference between expressive arts therapy and art therapy is that expressive arts therapy has an INTERMODAL approach, while art therapy tends to be focused on one particular art form.

What does "intermodal" mean in the context of expressive arts therapy?
Intermodality is a rich part of expressive arts therapy’s methodology where we are open to but not limited to moving from one art form to another in the same session. For example, you may be painting a picture, and at some point, I may offer a suggestion to try and respond to the painting with movement. This movement may lead to a dance or an embodied interpretation of the visual art which will open up an opportunity to EXPLORE and ANCHOR the experience more deeply.

JaneApp is a secure platform we will use for our online video sessions. It is also where you will be able to access my booking calendar for future appointments.
